Help the Poor - NOT

This is going to be a short post. It looks long, but trust me, it really isn't.

Today is the day The Forever Song by Julie Kagawa comes out!! :D I've been waiting forever. I can't wait to read it :)

And also, the cover for Marie Lu's The Young Elites was released a few days ago. It's so purrrty :3 But doesn't it look like the bottom has been cut off?

On another, less happy note, I found something...interesting. It's kind of sad, but it's very true. I think it speaks quite a bit about human nature.

fuck the poor, help the poor, human nature

People may say whatever they want and act all righteous, but when it comes down to it, does anything really get done?

Only a disappointing amount.

And I'll just leave you with that thought in mind.

Happy procrastinating :)

P.S. I was debating whether to name this post "Help the Poor" or "F*** the Poor". In the end, I went with the less offensive one.

Some People Just Piss Me Off

At my school, every once in a while a geography class will go around the school and dump out all the recycle bins. Sometimes, other classes will take a turn too.

Today, some other class was supposed to do the recycling bins, but because for some reason they couldn't, my teacher volunteered our class instead.

We didn't really mind because it meant no work :) But there were a lot of bins, and we were a small class, so it took the whole period to get through the whole school. And there are also really disgusting moments, like when you pick up a bin and your hands get all sticky because an open bottle spilled who-knows-what all over the bin. And after you dump everything out, only to find that the bottom of the bin is covered with bits of candy, gum and various other I-don't-wanna-know-what-that-is substances.

recycling dumpster
Yeah, one of these things. Is it called a dumpster?
Anyhow, while my partner and I were bringing the last few bins outside to the giant recycling box (is it called a dumpster?), we found that one of our classmates, Sparrow (no, that's not his real name), was standing inside the thing. And then I noticed that he was looking for something in all those papers, and that there was this girl standing outside the giant recycling box, peering inside. My teacher, my partner and I, and a few of my other classmates were standing around, waiting for them to finish so that we could dump out our black-boxes.

It turned out that the girl had lost some of her papers, and she thought that they might be in the recycling bins that we were dumping out. The papers included her notes for a speech, something to do with her art summative, and something else. She said that they were very important and that she didn't think she could duplicate them, so she really needed to find the papers. And Sparrow, being a really nice guy, was actually standing inside the dirty recycling dumpster, trying to find her papers among the thousands of other papers in there.

And the girl just stood there, watching.

After a while, we were getting impatient, and my teacher politely hinted that if she wanted to find the papers faster, maybe she should get in there too. I don't know if the girl didn't hear or ignored her, but either way, she just continued standing there, watching.

To speed up the process, another one of my classmates jumped into the giant recycling box thingy to help search for the papers. Within seconds, he had found 2 of the three items. The girl thanked him, and my two classmates continued to search through the giant mass of papers for the third item.

And still the girl just stood there. Watching.

By this time we were all getting pretty impatient, and the teacher again hinted, though not as subtly as before, that the girl should also climb in there to search for her own papers.

And do I even have to say it?

Finally, after a long time, the girl saw the impatient looks my teacher was shooting her and took the hint. She again thanked the guys for helping and left.

And that's the end of my story.

Why did I just tell you all of that? Well mostly because the whole thing kind of pissed me off. If I losed something important to me, sure I might ask other people for help, but I certainly wouldn't just stand back and let everyone else do all the work. The fact that that girl just stood back, relaxed, and watched while two other people got their hands dirty to help her really irks me.

What, was she afraid to get her own hands dirty? So what? I wouldn't like it either, but you can't ask of other people what you yourself won't do.

And that, boys and girls, is the moral of the story.

On another note, this is stuck in my head right now thanks to Sarah ;)

Love ya :)

Deception >:D

I got a package in the mail today!!! :D Aren't you just so happy when you get something in the mail? It makes me feel all special :)

the front of the package my sister sent me
The front of the package.
The package is from my sister. It's a present she ordered online for my birthday, which is coming up in about a week. I'm not going to open it until then. Well, I'm going to try. It'll be hard resisting the temptation haha :)

the back of the package my sister sent meAnyway, as a joke, the package says "From Larry", which is obviously not my sister's name. However, my little brother actually took it seriously and thinks that some dude named Larry sent me a package for no particular reason. Since I don't know any Larrys, he's getting really excited trying to figure out who sent it and why. So now he's constantly saying stuff like "What if there's an bomb inside??", "But how did they get our address?!", and "Maybe the numbers on it are a clue!! But what could they mean..." and you get the idea. And being the awesome sister that I am, I'm just leading him on :) But hey, can you blame me? It's hilarious to watch :D

Don't worry, I'll tell him eventually ;)

Book Review: Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Sorry it's been a while. I've been considering doing book reviews for some time, but I've never really gotten around to doing it - mostly because I suck at explaining things. But I'm going to try it anyway, and if this doesn't really work out, then...whatever. I'm posting this review anyway :P
Warning: SPOILERS!!! You probably do not want to read this if you haven't read Divergent and Insurgent.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Series: Divergent

Book #: 3

My Rating: 3.8 out of 5

Goodreads Rating: 3.63 out of 5

Genres: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia, Romance, Action

Summary:
(from book jacket)
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

My Thoughts:
Many of my friends had told me that they didn’t like Allegiant, and as a result, I wasn’t expecting much from the book. And when I actually started reading it, what they said seemed true. The beginning was so boring that it took me a week just to get through the first hundred pages. There were no new developments, nothing interesting happened, and it just felt like it was dragging on. Just when I was thinking that I'd have to force myself through the whole book just in honour of the other two, at around 100 pages in, it suddenly started getting a lot better. From there on, things started picking up.

The world outside the fence is finally revealed, and the questions that you’ve wondered about for the entire series are finally answered. Tris and Tobias’s relationship is developed even further, and in my opinion, becomes more realistic. Tris’s relationship with her brother, Caleb, and Tobias’s with his parents become more in-depth as well. By the end, I actually started to like Caleb again. Christina, Zeke, Uriah, Peter and Cara are all back. And as a plus, there are some really cute Tris and Tobias scenes :D

However, there is also this whole thing where they talk about DNA, and try to give the book a scientific aspect. The explanation really didn't make much sense to me. Just spewing out a bunch of scientific-y sounding names does not make it sound all smart and real. I suppose the basic concept was a good idea, but I just don't see how it would actually work in real life.

And the ending. Oh, the ending. It made me cry!! (Though admittedly, I cry for everything.) It was one of those endings that make me go:

bawling your eyes out after reading a book
Yup, that's pretty much me.
And then my parents walk in and wonder what the heck is wrong with me... heheh :) But they're used to it XD

While it was a sad ending, on the other hand, if the book had ended in any other way, it would have felt unrealistic. I know that lots of people don't agree with the way it ended, and I think I can see where they're coming from. But even though it wasn't flawless and perfect and happy and all that, personally, I’m kind of glad it ended the way it did. It felt like an appropriate ending to me.

Yes, it wasn't perfect, but I think its good points far outweigh the flaws. Allegiant starts out slow, but overall, was a satisfying conclusion to the Divergent trilogy.

Recommended: For everyone who has already read the rest of the series and wants closure.

Worth the read?  Yes.

So there ya go! Hope you liked it. If not, keep it to yourself :) And I warned you I suck at explaining :P

See ya.
